Speech Pathologists Medical Malpractice

Speech pathologists’ study, diagnose and treat communication disorders, including difficulties with:

  • Speaking

  • Listening

  • Understanding language

  • Reading and Writing

  • Social skills

  • Stuttering and using voice

  • Swallowing food and drink safely

 

They work with people who have difficulty communicating because of:

  • Developmental delays

  • Stroke

  • Brain injuries

  • Hearing loss

  • Learning and Intellectual disability

  • Cerebral palsy

  • Dementia

 

These allied health professionals have completed a recognised qualification at either a Bachelor or Master level to diagnose and treat communication disorders.

 

The testing techniques used to identify and diagnose relevant conditions include: 

  • Screening Tools

  • Informal Observations

  • Formal Assessment Tools

  • Specialist Assessment, Consultation and Treatment

 

The medical malpractice exposures presented to practitioners include: 

  • Delayed or incorrect diagnosis

  • Failure to refer

  • Inappropriate interventions

  • Inadequate or ineffective therapy

  • Inaccurate or incomplete documentation

  • Lack of proper consent

  • Miscommunication of treatment goals

  • Providing services outside of competency

  • Breach of confidentiality
